Welcome to Quarter 2, Panthers!

PUMPKINS

Welcome back, Panthers! Happy October! I hope you all had a nice Fall Break and a chance to recharge your batteries. School resumes Tuesday, Oct. 6 and it will be a minimum day. Homework packets will be due that day as well. Thank you for all your hard work; know that it will pay off in your education!

Field Trip – Our field trip to Mission Trails is Mon. Oct. 12.  If you haven’t turned in your permission slip and bus donation of $7, please do so by this Friday Oct. 9. Parent chaperones will be contacted this week.  Please remember you will need to bring a lunch, snack, water and wear walking shoes.  So excited to learn more about California’s Native Americans!

Scholastic Book Orders – also due this Fri. Oct. 9. Please turn in your completed order form and cash or check payable to Scholastic.  You may also order online at scholastic.com with our online class code LHK22.

Spirit Friday – It’s Crazy Sock Day this Fri. Oct. 9! Wear your craziest socks or mismatched socks. Life is too short to be matchy-matchy! Also, wear your Rosebank gear and show your Panther Pride!!

Recycling – Please remember to bring in your empty water bottles for our school recycling program. Bring them on Fridays to Room 808, the PTA room. Thank you for recycling to help our school and our planet!

AR Reading – Students will now be required to read 30 minutes every night before Thanksgiving Break. After Break, the requirement will increase to 35 minutes.  Keep building that stamina, Panthers! Students will still be required to earn 2 AR points per week. The class AR goal will be 18 points by Dec. 11, which will be our next AR Electronics Party. Students will also set an individual goal to earn a prize. Some ways to help: read to or with your child, have them read aloud to you, choose books based on interests, *talk to them about their books and their opinions*. Thank you for your support at home. Panthers love to read and succeed!

Achieve3000 Articles – Remember that students need to complete 2 articles per week at 75% or higher First Try. They may work on articles at school and at home. I will be sending parents notification on the Weekly Progress Reports.  Also, this quarter, we will work on the writing portion called the Thought Question. This month, we will work on it in class. In November, students should be starting to submit one Thought Question on their own by the end of the week.

Math – We will be starting Division.  If students still have trouble with their multiplication facts, please have them practice with flash cards. I will send extra practice sheets home.  We will continue to review multiplication at school, among other skills. Thank you for helping at home!

Quarter 2 Project Presentation – As part of the Listening and Speaking standards, students will work on a Book Jacket at school and home to present to the class this quarter. More info to come soon.

Healthy Focus – Just a reminder to have your child eat a healthy breakfast and bring healthy snacks/lunch/drinks to school. Fruits and vegetables, sandwich, crackers, water/juice, etc. instead of candies, chips, cookies, and sugary drinks. I recommend having your child bring a reusable water bottle with water only to class (spills are easier to clean up). Thank you! All of this helps so much with their energy, focus, and behavior at school. 🙂

October Learnings

Reading – We will be working on Accessing Complex Texts (ACT) by reading and annotating passages; participating in discussion and writing about text. The first unit focuses on cultural tales.

Math – Ch. 4 Division

Writing – Informative/Explanatory Writing Task, Opinion Essays, Achieve Thought Questions

Language – prefixes, suffixes, root words

Science – ecosystems

PE – 4-square, kickball, running club. We will run everyday or almost everyday and track our laps. Students may bring use their phone (and earbuds) for school-appropriate music and/or keeping track of miles while running. They must only use it for those purposes and at that time. They must put it away all other times.

Thank you for all you do at home, parents. You are awesome! Please let me know if you have any questions anytime. Have a super-duper, fantastic week, Panthers! Second quarter, here we come! ~ Mrs. King 🙂
